Chapter 8.4 – Digital Building Logbook (DBL)

A Digital Building Logbook (DBL)50 is a common repository for all relevant building data. This is intended to improve transparency, trust, informed decision-making and information sharing within the construction and real estate industry, particularly between building owners and users, financial institutions and authorities, and to promote the circular economy.

A DBL is a dynamic tool51 with which a variety of data, information and documents can be recorded, retrieved, enriched and organized according to specific categories. It covers the most important events and changes in the life cycle of a building, such as changes of ownership, possession or use, maintenance, renovation and other interventions. It also provides information on the environmental friendliness of products, such as durability, reparability, recycled content or availability of spare parts.

Data stored in the logbook can be static or dynamic in nature. The latter usually originate from intelligent devices and must be updated automatically and regularly.

It has not yet been defined which data from BIM models will flow into DBLs and which interfaces will be used. However, it is foreseeable that the integration of data from models into DLBs will be highly relevant in the future.
