Chapter 6.1 – Relevant international standards for the circular construction and real estate industry

A major challenge of digitalization in the construction and real estate sector is interoperability. Software applications must be able to exchange information. However, this is difficult to implement as long as no standardized data structures and exchange formats for digital information are available. CEN/TC 442 has developed two standards that enable such interoperability:

  • ISO 23386:202034 – Building information modeling and other digital processes in construction – Methodology for describing, creating and maintaining features in interconnected data catalogs
  • ISO 23387:202035 – Building information modeling (BIM) – Data templates for building objects during the life cycle of a built asset – Concepts and principles

These two standards, which describe and manage information on construction elements in the construction industry, are closely linked and complement each other. They are intended to promote interoperability and the exchange of information between different digital processes and enable a high-quality exchange of construction information between different players in the industry.

The relationship between them can be summarized as follows:

  • Governance: ISO 23386:2020 is a standard that sets out the rules for defining properties used in construction. It describes a methodology for the creation and maintenance of data dictionaries containing these properties.
  • Data templates: ISO 23387:2020 defines the principles and structures for data templates that are used in the life cycle of buildings. This allows information on products, systems, assemblies, rooms, etc. to be exchanged in a digitally structured manner and processes to be improved. The product data templates can query and provide data and retain their structure throughout the entire life cycle. A Product Data Template (PDT) is a machine-readable template that is used to structure information about any type of building object in the form of characteristics and make it exchangeable.

ISO 23387:2020 is based on the concepts and rules of ISO 23386:2020 and uses the properties defined in the data dictionaries to create data templates for components.

ISO 23387:2020 provides a “taxonomy” that describes the relationships between different building elements, based on the concepts of ISO 12006-3:2007. This taxonomy supports the information needs for the specific purposes of the data templates.

Other relevant standards are

  • ISO EN 22057:202236 provides the international data structure for LCA data.
  • Level of Information Need: SN EN 17412-1:202037 defines the logistics of data in planning as transactions, i.e. the planning of planning: What? What for? When? By whom?
  • Data Dictionaries: EN ISO 12006-3:202238 connects the world of standards, manufacturers and product data with the planning ecosystem.
