In summer 2023, the Swiss people approved the Climate Protection Act (KlG)30. The Act is a framework law and sets out climate protection targets. It places various requirements on the construction and real estate industry to reduce emissions from buildings and increase energy efficiency. The net zero target for 2050 is enshrined in law with the KIG. For the net zero calculation, the upstream and downstream processes must also be taken into account and therefore the emissions from building materials must also be included.
Other important points include:
- Support for the replacement of oil, gas and electric heating systems with climate-friendly heating systems
- Gradual tightening of building standards to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
- Mandatory for building energy certificates (GEAK).
- Stimulus program for innovation and energy efficiency from which the construction and real estate industry can benefit.
- Adaptation to the consequences of climate change and measures to protect people and nature.
