The EU’s Sustainable Product Initiative (SPI) is an important step towards a more sustainable economy and society. It comprises a series of measures aimed at making the design, production, use and sale of products on the EU market more environmentally friendly and circular.
The SPI provides for producer responsibility for products that are placed on the EU market. Manufacturers should ensure that their products are as sustainable, durable, reusable, repairable and recyclable as possible and are also manufactured in an energy-efficient manner. They should also provide the necessary information about the environmental impact of their products digitally, for example through a digital product passport (DPP). Manufacturers should also bear the costs for the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of their products or at least contribute to them. Producer responsibility is intended to create incentives for better product design, greater resource efficiency and a longer service life.
For the construction and real estate industry, the SPI includes the following initiatives, among others:
- A new regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products (ESPR) extends and improves the existing regulation. The ESPR is intended to make it possible to define far-reaching requirements for the performance and information of products in order to make them more environmentally friendly and durable.
- The revision of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) is based on the objectives of the ESPR and improves the provision of environmental information on construction products.
