The Paris Agreement9 calls on all contracting parties to develop so-called long-term climate strategies. It aims to limit average global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, with a maximum temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Another goal is to align public and private financial flows with low-greenhouse gas development and adaptability to a changing climate.
Switzerland signed the Paris Agreement in 2015 and ratified it in 2017. Greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced to the target value of net zero by 2050, i.e. no more greenhouse gas emissions are to be emitted from 2050 onwards.
