Chapter 2.4 – Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)7 comprise 17 goals for sustainable development that were adopted by the United Nations in 2015. These goals are interlinked and take into account that interventions in one area have an impact on the others. They recognize that initiatives to improve the quality of life for all people are essential, while at the same time environmental protection and the promotion of economic and social development must go hand in hand (Do not harm principle). They are a shared plan for peace and prosperity for all people and the entire planet, now and in the future.

The SDGs cover various global challenges such as poverty, hunger, health, education, climate, energy, environment, justice and partnership. They are universally applicable and should be implemented by all countries and stakeholders.

The SDGs are to be achieved globally and by all UN member states by 2030. This means that all states are equally called upon to solve the world’s pressing challenges together. Switzerland is also called upon to implement the goals nationally. In addition, incentives are to be created to encourage non-state actors to make a more active contribution to sustainable development8.
