The Federal Council adopted the long-term climate strategy27 for the 2050 net-zero target28 in August 2019. It is an important step towards net zero and formulates ten strategic principles that should guide and shape Switzerland’s climate policy actions in the coming years. The strategy sets out possible climate targets and emission trends for the sub-sectors of buildings, industry, transport, international aviation, agriculture and food, waste, synthetic gases and the financial market.

In the buildings sector, the climate strategy focuses on largely decarbonizing the energy supply and improving energy efficiency. By 2050, the building stock should no longer cause any greenhouse gas emissions. In order for fossil fuels to be replaced quickly and completely, renovation activity must increase significantly over the next few years. The frequency of energy-efficient refurbishment of building components (windows, façades, roofs and floors) and the depth of refurbishment, i.e. the consumption of comprehensively refurbished buildings, must be increased.
