Chapter 14.2 – Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV)

The standards pyramid65 of the Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV) shows the hierarchy and the relationship between national, European and international standards. It consists of four levels:

  1. International standards developed by global organizations such as ISO or IEC. These standards have a global scope and validity and are intended to promote international harmonization and cooperation.
  2. European standards developed by European organizations such as CEN or CENELEC. These standards have a regional scope and validity and are intended to support the European single market.
  3. National standards are developed in Switzerland under the umbrella organization SNV. These include SIA, VSS, asut, electrosuisse, INB, swissmem and other standardization organizations. These standards have a national scope and validity and are intended to take into account the specific needs and requirements of Switzerland.
  4. Subordinate standards that are developed by professional associations, industry organizations or companies. These standards have a limited scope and validity and are intended to define the technical details or quality criteria for specific products, services or processes.
