Chapter 2.3 – Climate strategies

The United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) are pursuing comprehensive strategies to create an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050, as one of the main goals, puts a strong focus on the environmental impact of the construction and real estate sector. In particular, the EU Green Deal will oblige the construction sector to make a significant contribution to protecting the environment and achieving the climate targets. The EU has issued a number of directives and regulations that relate to the construction and real estate sector, such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR)4, the Construction Products Regulation (CPR)5 and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD)6. These regulations aim to reduce the energy consumption of buildings, minimize their environmental impact and promote the circular economy. By taking measures to improve energy efficiency, promoting sustainable materials and integrating the principles of the circular economy, the sector is to be given a pioneering role in the sustainable economy. The circular economy contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and stimulates innovation and sustainable product development. This leads to more environmentally friendly construction products and methods that are geared towards durability and recyclability. In addition, new business models and greater legal compliance are emerging, raising environmental awareness in the industry and driving a more sustainable construction and real estate industry.
