Chapter 10 – Use cases – Use case management

From use case to level of information need

The Use Case Management Service from buildingSMART international6 enables the collection, specification and exchange of best practices for various use cases. The use cases form the basis for defining the requirements for the exchange of information. Based on the Information Delivery Manual (IDM) methodology developed by buildingSMART, the processes and the resulting information exchange requirements and thus the level of information need are described. The precise regulation of the flow of information between the respective project participants enables integrative cooperation, and data is exchanged efficiently and error-free.

Various use cases are described below in varying depth for the core elements of IDM:

Use Case

Use cases define the content and scope of information delivery.

Process definition


The process definition is carried out using at least one of the following methods: process diagram / interaction diagram / transaction diagram.

Exchange Requirements


(Information exchange requirements) – Requirements for the exchange of information in a non-technical format.
