Chapter 1 – Situation

The BIM method is predestined to support those involved in the development of solutions in the areas of planning, construction and operation. The reason is obvious – BIM is the approach that creates the link between established construction processes and information management and data-based collaboration.

The prerequisite is a common understanding of the required information or depth of information requirements. This is from the perspective of provision (supplier) as well as from the perspective of use (recipient). The focus is on the level of information required by the actors involved at a specific point in the process: the “level of information need”. The SN EN ISO 19650 series of standards, Organization of data on construction works – Information management with BIM, identifies the processes and roles in the provision of information from the perspective of the information recipient and the information provider.

SN EN 17412-1:2020 Building information modeling – Level of information need – Part 1: Concepts and principles provides the methodological basis for defining the level of information need. It serves to precisely describe the information deliveries in a machine-readable form in BIM processes.

The methodology is essentially based on two steps. In the first step, the prerequisite is defined (why, when, who, what) and in the second step the depth of information required is described (how).

Step 1: Definition of the prerequisite
why, when, who, what

Step 2: Definition of the level of information need
Required depth of information on geometry, alphanumerics
and documentation

This publication by Bauen Digital Schweiz / buildingSMART Switzerland takes up this new definition and establishes a link to current practice and to further norms and standards.

The result of the project-specific definition of the Level of Information Need is part of a BIM Execution Plan (BEP). These relationships are described in detail in the standards SN EN ISO 19650 and guidelines, documents such as “BIM Execution Model” and “BIM Utilization Plan”, which are also published by Bauen digital Schweiz / buildingSMART Switzerland1 and SIA Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects2.
